Warriors give a salute to ‘Sarge’
‘DO IT for Sarge’. That was Wigan’s mantra on an emotionally fraught night as centre Dan Sarginson played just days after the death of his younger brother.
Adam Sarginson passed away suddenly last weekend at the age of 23 and his elder sibling has, understandably, been left devastated by the loss.
Wigan head coach Shaun Wane told his
WIGAN WAKEFIELD
player to take as much time off as he needed but Sarginson chose to throw himself straight back into work.
The 25-year-old from Hemel Hempstead lined up in his usual left-centre spot and, after such a traumatic few days, playing rugby again marked something approaching a return to normality.
A minute’s silence was held prior to kick-off, during which Wigan’s players gathered in a huddle, and was the prelude to a hard-fought victory for Wane’s title-chasers.
They led from their first attack, when a delightful handling sequence saw the ball pass through Thomas Leuluai, George Williams and Sam Tomkins before Oliver Gildart finished with aplomb in the left corner.
Hooker Sam Powell dived over the line from acting half-back for a second Wigan try in the 19th minute.
Wakefield, who had Matty Ashurst and Scott Grix sin-binned, hit back with a long-range interception score from winger Tom Johnstone.
Tomkins added a drop-goal and a penalty but Wakefield replied through centre Bill Tupou, before tries from Morgan Escare and Joe Greenwood confirmed Wigan’s victory.
Sarginson played the full 80 minutes.
