Scots ‘have to make it right’

- Ronnie Esplin

KIERAN TIERNEY says the Scotland players are well aware of the importance of their UEFA Nations League opener tonight against Albania at Hampden Park.

Alex McLeish’s side lost 4-0 in their friendly against World Cup semi-finalists Belgium at the national stadium on Friday night, their biggest home defeat in 45 years.

And with Albania kicking off their Nations League campaign with a 1-0 win over Israel on Saturday, Tierney knows Scotland need to fashion an immediate response to avoid losing ground in their three-team group.

The Celtic left-back said: “It is really important. It is a home game as well and we want to give the fans something to cheer about, which we didn’t do on Friday.

“It wasn’t good enough and we have to

make it right. This competition gives us more of a chance, which is great.”

Tierney was moved into a back three by McLeish on Friday, with new captain Andy Robertson taking his usual role on the left. And the 21-year-old was diplomatic when asked which position he would choose to play.

“It is up to the manager where he plays me but everybody knows what position I play,” he said. “The manager trusts me in another position, which is good.

“I have played there a few times for Celtic so I am familiar to a certain extent and I am enjoying learning a new position as well. As long as you are on the park you do your best for the country.” TIERNEY: Response
