Threats to Ramos life

- By Jeremy Cross

SPAIN and Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos received death threats in the wake of the Champions League final against Liverpool.

Ramos, below, was Public Enemy No1 with England fans during Spain’s 2-1 win at Wembley on Saturday.

They jeered and booed him from start to finish to outline he has become a hate figure following Real’s win over Jurgen Klopp’s men in Kiev in May.

Ramos, of course, was involved in a clash with Mohamed Salah that saw the Reds star forced off with a serious shoulder injury

early in the game. He was also involved in a collision with Loris Karius before the goalkeeper made two crucial mistakes.

Fans accused Ramos, 32, of injuring both on purpose and the veteran defender said the fallout had been a living hell for him and his family. But Ramos said his conscience was clear. “One tries to evade [the boos],” he said.

“In the end you feel it but I stay out of everything. It doesn’t affect my game.

“I would have liked another reception because people only remember the action of the final and nobody remembers the death threats that my family and my children received.

“It is a very sensitive issue that people maybe take as a joke and that’s why they whistle in a great stadium like Wembley. My conscience is very clear. I have already explained and I do not have to give more explanations.”

Yet Ramos did feel the need to reiterate that he did not try to hurt Salah, adding: “As I said before, I have never tried to hurt a colleague.

“There are people who may have misunderstood it, but these are football things. It will not change anything in my game or in me.”

He heaped praise on Spanish team-mate David de Gea after the Manchester United goalkeeper made a string of good saves to help Spain beat Gareth Southgate’s World Cup semi-finalists.

Ramos said: “He is a great goalkeeper. We have always said it.

“The big games are those that mark the great players. After a World Cup with many doubts, he deserved this.”
