BRITISH stars triumphed at the Emmys with Claire Foy and Thandie Newton taking top awards – but they were almost overshadow­ed by a surprise wedding proposal.

Claire took lead actress for playing the young Queen Elizabeth II in hit Netflix show The Crown. She dedicated her Emmy to co-star Matt Smith, who played Prince Philip.

Line Of Duty star Thandie Newton won best supporting actress in a drama series for her role in the sci-fi action thriller Westworld.

In the best one-liner of the night at the 70th annual Emmy Awards at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles on Monday, the 45-year-old accepted the accolade with the quip: “I don’t believe in God, but I’m going to thank her.”

British director Stephen Daldry won the drama series directing honour for The Crown.

Satirical writer Charlie Brooker won the prize for a limited series, movie or dramatic special for his subversive Channel 4 series Black Mirror. He won two awards last year for the same show. Welsh actor Matthew Rhys won best actor for his part in the Cold War thriller The Americans.

Henry Winkler, who was nominated in 1976 for his starring role as The Fonz in much-loved series Happy Days, was awarded the outstandin­g supporting actor in a comedy series gong for his role as acting coach Gene Cousineau in HBO’s Barry.

The unofficial prize for best Emmys Moment went to Glenn Weiss who accepted a trophy for his work directing last year’s Academy Awards and used the moment to propose to his girlfriend Jan Svendsen.

Amid cheers from the crowd a stunned Jan made her way to the stage where Glenn got down on one knee and gave her his mother’s engagement ring.

“I want to put this ring that my mom wore The Fonz star Winkler won his first Emmy Claire dedicated her award to co-star Matt Smith who played Prince Philip on your finger in front of all these people and in front of my mom and your parents watching from above,” he said. “Will you marry me?” She accepted. The Marvelous Mrs Maisel was a big winner. The Amazon show picked up five Emmys including best comedy actress for newcomer Rachel Brosnahan. Game Of Thrones won the Emmy for best drama series.
