Champion... Northerners are funniest

- By Stian Alexander

NORTHERNERS are funnier than Southerners – even according to those down South, a study shows.

A poll of 1,500 Britons – split equally between North and South – found that 74 per cent thought those living in the North of England were funniest.

Helped by famous Liverpudlian comics – including John Bishop, Sir Ken Dodd and Les Dennis – Scousers were voted funniest of all, with 23 per cent of the vote.

Newcastle upon Tyne, home city of comedians Sarah Millican and Ross Noble, came second, followed by London.

Manchester, home to Jason Manford and Steve Coogan, was named fourth.

Dirtiest

Britain’s “least funny” people, with two per cent of the vote, were folk from Brighton, according to the poll for Comedy Central Live festivals.

Glaswegians headed by Frankie Boyle were labelled the dirtiest, most likely to tell non-PC jokes.

The research also revealed that Britons laugh out loud an average 11 times a day.

However, one in six admitted nobody ever laughed at his or her jokes. Penny Brough, of Comedy Central Live – which is staging a three-day comedy festival in Southampton next month – said: “Northerners may have come out top in the comedy stakes but we know Southerners are just as funny. For one weekend, we will be making Southampton the funniest place in Britain.

“We have a diverse line up of comedians from the whole country to suit all comedy tastes.”

The five funniest cities were Liverpool, Newcastle upon Tyne, London, Manchester and Glasgow. And the five least funny, starting from the bottom, were Brighton, Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol and Edinburgh.
