Sterling – who scored the opener – and applied a clinical finish for 2-0 in the 65th minute.

Aguero, 29, has been struggling with a foot problem and was taken off straight after the goal. Manager Pep Guardiola later revealed the plan was always to play him for around an hour.

Champions City went back to the summit of the table with this win and the draw between Chelsea and Liverpool.

Guardiola’s side are away to Hoffenheim in the Champions League tomorrow – when Aguero is likely to be rested – and then face a huge test at Liverpool on Sunday.

City, who lost twice at Anfield last season, have not won there since 2003 and Silva admitted that this week – having lost their Champions League opener at home to Lyon – is a huge one for his side.

“We’ve started the week well, now we have to try and come back from the first game we had in the Champions League,” he said. “We want to finish this next week the best way, then go on the international break with three points in each competition.”

Brighton manager Chris Hughton insisted his side do not have a mental block when it comes to playing away.

The Seagulls have not won on the road in the Premier League since November 2017, a run of 17 games. But Hughton said: “I can honestly say it doesn’t feel like an issue because I look at last season, when we got enough points at home, so there’s the balance.

“It’s not something we think about and our approach is the same.”
