episodes between 1974 and 1992. Hayes died in hospital from pneumonia with his wife Sarah and son Tom by his side, his manager Phil Dale said.

Mr Dale added: “The family would like to express their thanks to the many fans over the years as it always gave Geoffrey so much pleasure to know that he and his Rainbow team had given so much fun to audiences.”

Speaking in 2002, Hayes said: “Practically all the time people come up to me and it really breaks me up because they thank me for being part of their childhood.” SAMANTHA Markle, the half-sister of the Duchess of Sussex, apologised to Meghan live on TV yesterday for insulting her – and insisted she had come to Britain to end their family feud.

Samantha, 53, told how she waited outside Buckingham Palace on Sunday in the hope of seeing Meghan, 37, but accepted it was unlikely to happen.

She appeared on Jeremy Vine’s Channel 5 discussion show to explain why she had lashed out after she and most relatives were not invited to the Royal Wedding on May 19.

But Vine accused her of trying to shame the duchess on her visit to the UK. And Samantha also met a barrage of criticism from callers during the phone-in.

Samantha said: “Everybody was hurt at not being included or invited to the wedding.

“I felt as though it could have all been nipped in the bud had everyone been included and we had all agreed to move forward with positive resolve. The hurt feelings wouldn’t have snowballed.”

In a direct message to Meghan, she said: “It doesn’t mean we love you any less. I just think families can be this way when there’s confusion and when people are hurt. So moving forward, I apologise and I wish things could be different.”

She was also upset about the way her father, Thomas Markle, 74, had been treated. “He was being purposely ignored,” she said. “We were hoping that private channels would be used. When they failed we went public.”

But Vine replied: “You want to shame her – that’s what it is.” Samantha said: “The public were making a mockery of the family and it had to stop.

“Perhaps I was frustrated. I was lashing out more at the media.”

But caller Chris of Kent told her: “All we’ve seen is the hate you’ve spewed against your sister.

“If you actually love your sister I think this should have been done in private, not on social media, or going on television saying you’re sorry. What you’re doing is not right.”
