Sussex success for Duke and Duchess

- By Mark Reynolds and Richard Palmer

PRINCE Harry and Meghan were mobbed by adoring well-wishers yesterday when they made their first official visit to the county from which they take their title. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were greeted by thousands of cheering fans in Brighton, East Sussex. Onlookers cheered “Harry, Harry, Harry” and “Meghan, Meghan, Meghan” depending on which of the two they most wanted to see. During the visit the Duke took time to high five all 30 pupils from Queen’s Park Primary School. Teacher Emma Johnston said the children, aged eight and nine, questioned the royal visitors on their favourite subjects and teachers. She continued: “The Duchess said her favourite subject was maths. The Duke asked what subject they had missed today and they said PE, but that it was worth it. “It’s lovely to see them so excited. They were very aware of who was coming after the royal wedding.” The couple earlier travelled to Bognor Regis in West Sussex to officially open the University of Chichester’s Engineering and Digital Technology Park. As they mingled with members of the public in Chichester, East Sussex, a laughing Prince Harry was forced to beg French teacher Charlotte Sleep to release her firm grip. When the pair shook hands she told him: “I’m not letting go,” prompting him to pull a face as he replied: “Please let go!” Later they visited the seaside town of Peacehaven, but it was in Brighton that they drew the biggest crowds when they spent 30 minutes meeting well-wishers.

Harry, 34, dressed in a grey suit and open neck shirt, while Meghan, 37, wore a dark-green pencil skirt with a matching silk shirt under an Armani coat paired with nude suede stilettos.

As they walked into the Royal Pavilion, built by George, Prince of Wales, in the 1780s, Jessica Hilliard said: “Welcome to Brighton, the coolest city.”

Harry quipped back, “I have just come from West Sussex and they say they ON the occasion of her visit to the new dukedom, the Duchess of Sussex chose an autumnal outfit in shades of forest green teamed with neutral shades of cream and beige. With her hair swept back in a neater version of her trademark low bun with strands of hair delicately framing her face, Meghan cut a stylish figure in her form-fitting outfit. The Duchess wrapped up in a have the coolest city.” Margaret Osbourne, from Kemptown told Meghan it was her 66th birthday.

“She wished me happy birthday,” she said.

“She is stunning, even better than she is in photographs. Her personality is very natural.”

Sally Robinson, 80, waited for two hours with husband Peter, 83, to see the couple and chatted with Meghan.

She said: “I asked her if she was enjoying Sussex and she said it was stunning.”

Harry’s mother, Diana Princess of Wales also met the public in Brighton an official visit in 1990. Her friend Rosa Monckton, 64, who runs a charity in the city, was there yesterday.

She said of Harry: “I think it is really good to see him taking on his mother’s role.

“She would be just incredibly proud to see him doing as well and he is doing and would be so happy to see him with a bride.”

Harry was given the title of Duke of Sussex by his grandmother, the Queen, on his wedding to Meghan.

Their marriage meant she became the Duchess.
