A “PERFECTIONIST” teacher died after she was found hanged at home by her husband after she had been described as “emotionally immature”, an inquest has heard. Talented Chelsey Peart, 27, was signed off work by her GP but became distressed after a report by an occupational therapist. Doncaster coroner’s court heard that Chelsey’s husband Mark, a firefighter, found her hanging when he returned from work to their home in Brampton Bierlow, Rotherham, on April 11. Mr Peart told the inquest in a statement that he arrived at home when the house was in darkness. He discovered Chelsey hanging and tried to save her life but it was too late. The inquest heard how Chelsey, who taught textiles at Rawmarsh Community School, Rotherham, and also ran a textiles business, had been signed off work as unwell by her GP after the occupational therapist report. The inquest heard she had told colleagues of having suicidal thoughts on other occasions and had tried to kill herself in February.

Talented

Helen O’Brien, head teacher at Rawmarsh, described Chelsey as “very, very talented”.

She said: “Chelsey disagreed with the occupational health report. I said I would speak to her GP to get a second opinion. The door was kept open. At no point was Chelsey told she wouldn’t be able to return to school.”

Her mother, who was present at the hearing, said the report had “changed her completely”.

Recording a narrative verdict, Louise Slater, assistant coroner for Doncaster, said she could not record Chelsey’s death as suicide because the evidence she had heard did not prove the teacher intended to take her own life.

In a criticism of the therapist report she questioned the use of the phrase “emotionally immature”, saying it was not a “medical diagnosis”. She added: “I have no doubt that it had a very detrimental effect on Chelsey’s wellbeing.”

Mrs Slater added: “Chelsey was a good teacher. She was liked and respected by her peers. But it would appear from the evidence that Chelsey found it difficult to accept that she was actually quite good at what she did.

“She was always striving to be better and perhaps she was a bit of a perfectionist.”
