Boozing, ketchup and tea...how we annoy the French
WHILE Brexit may have annoyed many Europeans a new study has discovered a host of other reasons why the French hate the English.
Nearly one in three French adults dislikes English people immensely, the survey found.
Their biggest bugbear is our driving on the left, but they also believe the English are obsessed with the Royal Family and are also hopeless cooks. The French also dislike our love of tea, our loud drunks, the pouring of ketchup on food and our belief that we are the best.
Researchers asked 700 French adults and 700 Germans if they hate the English.
Thankfully, the Germans were more tolerant of us, with just 15 per cent feeling as passionately antiEnglish as the French – naming football hooliganism as the chief reason.
The Germans also did not like the English for binge- drinking, singing loudly in the street when drunk and the expectation that everyone else speaks the language.
Some 1,200 English adults polled were generally quite happy to have some of the traits other nationalities despise, although four out of five do wish we behaved better abroad. But it is not all bad of the French good manners.
And a third think we produce great music. They also like our sense of humour.
OnePoll made the study for TV channel History and Al Murray’s show Why Does Everyone Hate The English?
The comedian said: “It’s always an eyeopener to find out why you might annoy someone.
“Often it’s the things you like about yourself, like drinking tea. But this shows that the people next door are always the ones you’re most likely to have wound up the wrong way.
“And when it comes to winding up the French, we’ve been at it for 1,000 years, the Germans are the ‘Johann come lately’ on this one. “It’s a relief to see there are some things that the French and Germans like and humour plays a strong part.
“So there is hope for English people in Europe – just have a laugh and make sure you don’t drive on the left.”
