Warriors’ finishing touch

-

ALAN SOLOMONS praised his side’s finishing as Worcester achieved this record Premiership win against Bristol at Sixways.

Francois Venter, Ryan Mills, Marco Mama, Chris Pennell, Josh Adams, Bryce Heem and GerritJan van Velze scored the Warriors’ tries, with Duncan Weir converting all seven, while Pennell also slotted an early penalty.

This win surpassed their 51-10 victory over Newcastle in 2008 and Solomons said: “We spoke about our finishing during the week and it’s satisfying that we pretty much took every chance we had.

“We had a shaky first 10 minutes but after that were able to convert pressure into points and Chris Pennell’s try early in the second half was crucial as it probably ruled out any comeback.” The win

moved Worcester up to seventh in the table after six league fixtures.

“We should have won our home games against Newcastle and Wasps as we created opportunities but didn’t finish them,” he added.

“Still, I’m happy with 13 points from the first six. The Premiership is not a sprint but a marathon but at least we’ve had a decent start.

“We have set out our stall to perform well week to week but today was a clinical performance in a key game. We won’t get ahead of ourselves as there are no easy games in the Premiership and some of our lads need a break.”

Bristol’s try came from Yann Thomas and was converted by Ian Madigan on a miserable afternoon for them. Director of rugby Pat Lam said: “That’s life. We’ve all had games like that, as players and coaches, and you have to take your medicine and move on.

“We didn’t win the ball, lost the collisions and our kicking game was not accurate enough.”

Bristol have conceded 97 points in their last two Premiership outings and Lam added: “In both these games our defence has been completely out of shape, but if you are consistently defending, fatigue will kick in.

“Most thought we and Worcester would finish 11th and 12th in the league but both have done extremely well in their opening fixtures. Saracens and Exeter are in a different league and the rest of us are striving to get there.”
