What exactly did John Major ever do for Britain?
THE usual Remainer suspects are reaching peak Project Fear this week as they hope that EU intransigence will trigger a second referendum. Michael Heseltine, Tony Blair and Nick Clegg, what a motley bunch of politicians they are, seeking to undermine our national desire for freedom from a failing European Union. Shame on them all.
Worst of all has been ex-prime minister John Major saying we’ll be a middle-ranking nation with no significant allies if we leave the EU. This from the man who sold our sovereignty down the river with the Maastricht Treaty in the 1990s. No wonder voters dumped him in 1997.
He opens up his latest gloomy tirade by saying we’ll no longer be a good ally of the US if we leave the bloc. He claims the only reason American presidents like us is because of our access to Brussels. Tell that to President Donald Trump who has consistently backed our Brexit vote. Tell that to US ambassador in the UK Woody Johnson, who has shown me where he wants to commission a pair of sculptures of British imperial lions to stand behind two American eagles on his garden terrace.
The symbolism is clear – who would not want the fifth largest economy and the sixth strongest armed forces in the world on their side? Plus our proven track record of standing by them at times of crisis throughout the past 100 years. Clearly, Mr Trump and Mr Johnson have got more faith in our “special relationship” than Mr Major.
HE CLAIMS we’ll no longer be a buffer between the “FrancoGerman steamroller and smaller nations”. Were we ever? It seems the past decade has been a sorry tale of the Germans bullying smaller nations to stay in the euro and endure high unemployment and austerity in order to keep the currency low so they can carrying on shipping cheap German cars around the world.
