Norrie steamrollers Granollers

-

CAMERON NORRIE booked his place in the last 16 of the European Open with a straightforward victory over Spanish qualifier Marcel Granollers.

World No87 Norrie, 23, was facing an opponent only eight places below him in the rankings but the British No2 was relatively untroubled and required just 63 minutes to wrap up a 6-3, 6-2 win.

Norrie’s reward is a meeting with second seed EASY DOES IT: Norrie set up a clash with Schwartzman Diego Schwartzman, the runner-up in the past couple of years in Antwerp.

Schwartzman, the 26-year-old Argentinian, is ranked No17 in the world, two places below British No1 Kyle Edmund.

Norrie will be confident of producing an upset, however, having beaten John Isner in Lyon in May to record a career-first top-10 scalp.

In Moscow, British No1 Johanna Konta advanced to the Kremlin Cup quarter-finals thanks to a 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 win over Daria Gavrilova.

Konta, below, was cruising at a set and 2-0 up before her Moscowborn opponent, ranked No38 and now an Australian citizen, won six of the next seven games to level.

Konta responded by taking a 3-0 lead in the deciding set and came through in two hours and nine minutes. She will now play world No31 Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belarus, who came from behind to beat fourth seed Kiki Bertens 6-3, 4-6, 6-3. Bertens needed to make the semifinals to qualify for next week’s WTA Finals in Singapore but her defeat means Karolina Pliskova qualifies instead. However, Bertens may yet compete in Singapore if world No1 Simona Halep is ruled out by a back injury.
