Autumn reflected in all its glory

- By Mark Reynolds

A RING of rust-coloured trees in the Derbyshire Peak District and autumn reflected in all its glory in the still waters of a Perthshire loch were revealed yesterday as Britain basked in unseasonably warm weather.

Forecasters said the fine outlook would continue for at least most of the next week as high pressure dominates over the UK.

As a result, with the exception of north-west Scotland, the sunny conditions will be the main abiding factor.

A spokesman for forecasters Meteogroup UK said: “It will be dry with sunny spells for much of England and Wales.

“It is also likely to be sunny in north-eastern Scotland, where the afternoon will be rather warm with westerly winds for northern areas.

“On Monday, it will be dry with sunny spells for most.”

The warm weather has meant the normal colours of autumn are taking a little longer than usual to take hold.

But the picturesque drone shot was captured at dawn at Minninglow in the White Peak area of the Derbyshire Peak District near Matlock.

Meanwhile the colourful display at Loch Faskally in Perthshire reflected the colours of the season building. The unusually warm October has followed on from a sizzling, record-breaking summer and spring this year.

However Public Health England has revealed that temperatures soaring in excess of 86F (30C) for extended periods, such as in June and July this year led to a large spike in deaths.

In the last week of June, when temperatures rose above 86F, 382 more deaths occurred than the average.

And during unseasonably warm spring temperatures in April, 243 more deaths were observed than the five-year average.

Experts said many of the deaths could have been prevented if the public had been made aware “about the increasing risks of heatwaves due to climate change”.

The Office for National Statistics’ quarterly mortality report only deals with the months from April to June, meaning the effect of the hot weather that continued throughout July is not accounted for.

The report revealed “specific instances of increased mortality that coincided with periods of increased temperature in England”.
