The only way is up for Rafa

- Ian Murtagh

RAFA BENITEZ says Newcastle will not be relegated despite their disastrous start to the season.

The Magpies face Brighton at St James’ Park today having lost all four home games this term. They have not won since May and suffered defeat in 11 of their last 14 matches.

But ahead of a game he believes can launch the Toon’s campaign, Benitez was upbeat and predicted victory and safety for his side, saying he is the man best-equipped to deliver both.

“I don’t fear the sack,” he said. “Is it a difficult situation? Yes, because you are at the bottom of the table. Something we were not expecting? No, it could be. You see the fixtures and the level of other teams and knew we could be there, more or less.

“Will it be more difficult than last year? Yes, but we are still confident because the players are training really well. We have to win one game and it will be a lift for everyone, and we will beat Brighton. I am

optimistic.” Benitez has largely escaped blame from the Toon Army, whose anger is directed at owner Mike Ashley for a lack of investment. And the manager is adamant no one could have done a better job in the same circumstances.

“You have to consider when I came here, what happened, when I decided to stay, what happened,” he said. “We will do well and we will stay in the Premier League.”

Brighton manager Chris Hughton does not expect to see Benitez sacked. “They’ve stuck by the manager because he has done a good job,” said Hughton. “He has got promotion for them and finished 10th in the Premier League.

“Newcastle supporters appreciate the wonderful job Rafa has done there. It has been a difficult start for them but they will turn it around.”
