- By Kaisha Langton

Protest...Jacob Ford with a banned rucksack and, right, a stack of books SCHOOL has banned bags on “health and safety” grounds.

Pupils at Spalding Grammar, Lincs, were told: “Injury was being caused to younger students as a result of sixth-formers carrying ever-larger bags on their shoulders.

“Bags of any size may be used to bring books and kit to and from school, but bags are not permitted in lessons during the day.”

A-Level student Jacob Ford, 17, was suspended for two days after he took his stuff to school in a wicker basket and even a microwave to make a point. He also penned a “document of defence” in which he blamed the move on events involving “the year sevens and one member of staff”.

He wrote: “These people have been struck in the face or knocked backwards by our bags swinging around in the corridor.

“I do not doubt this ever happening. But is the best solution really to outright ban backpacks?”

Jacob said the move could force students to risk their “physical development” as guidelines recomA mend carrying books on the back. He added: “Many students have recently paid for new rucksacks, not knowing of the rule changes. So me or my parents having to fork out for a new bag is outrageous.”

His mother, Tracy Ford, 48, said: “I believe he should have his say. I am very proud of him for standing up for something he believes in.”

Hannah Catterall, whose petition against the ban gained 463 signatures, said: “By not permitting backpacks students are unable to carry revision materials to and from school with ease and grades may dramatically decrease.” Parents took to social media to slam the rule, which saw youngsters forced to transfer their books into plastic carrier bags for lessons.

Bridget Allan, who has two children at the school, posted: “I think it is ridiculous.”

Michel Wilson wrote: “Whoever put this on the agenda should be made to carry the books for a student for a week.”

Suzanne Brown added: “It causes more stress for the children for absolutely no good reason.” The school has declined to comment.
