Bromwich out to make amends

- By Julie Stott

JESSE BROMWICH plans to make England pay for the biggest mistake of his life.

The New Zealand forward was dropped for last year’s World Cup after appearing to be caught taking cocaine.

He is now back in the fold, but has lost the captaincy, and the 29-year-old is desperate to make amends.

He said: “It was the biggest mistake of my life but I have moved on now and I do not look back. It is awesome to be back with the boys, instead of watching them on TV and I’m proud that I made the team again.”

His Kiwi team-mate Kevin Proctor – who was also axed over the incident – is back as well for the three-Test series against England.

It kicks off in Hull on Saturday and Bromwich, who was banned for two games by Melbourne Storm, says he has an extra reason to do well.

His wife Lezyola gave birth to their third son Manaia just two weeks before the Kiwis left for England. He said: “I spoke to my wife for hours about whether I should go or not.

“It was a tough decision and it was hard to get on the plane.

“She is having a bit of a tough time looking after the three of them but I spend a lot of time calling them and texting them. FaceTime makes it feel like you are close by so that is helping a lot and I want to make them proud.”

New Zealand crashed out to Fiji in the World Cup quarter-finals and coach David Kidwell was replaced by former Wigan boss Michael Maguire.

The Kiwis lost to England in his first game in Denver in June but then shocked Australia 26-24 earlier this month.
