It wasn’t me!
Star Schwimmer’s spoof video after Blackpool police hunt ‘Ross from Friends boozy thief’
FRIENDS actor David Schwimmer was forced to plead his innocence in a spoof video last night, after bizarrely being mistaken for a thief... in Blackpool.
Police hunting a mystery man for the alleged theft of a jacket, wallet and mobile phone from a restaurant posted a CCTV image of the suspect holding a crate of beer in a shop.
But Twitter users said the man was a dead ringer for Schwimmer’s Friends character Ross. And after the Hollywood star, 51, heard he was causing a stir on the Lancashire coast, he reconstructed the police CCTV – also suspiciously carrying beer through a shop.
He tweeted: “Officers, I swear it wasn’t me! As you can see, I was in New York. To the hard-working Blackpool police, good luck with the investigation.”
Lancashire Police joined in by “clearing” Schwimmer of any criminal involvement in the alleged theft on September 20.
Suspect
More than 35,000 people commented on the force’s post, stressing the suspect could easily be mistaken for the star of the hit US sitcom, which ran from 1994 to 2004.
The force replied: “Police thank you to everyone for your speedy responses. We have investigated this matter thoroughly and have confirmed that David Schwimmer was in America on this date!”
And echoing the lyrics to The Rembrandts’ Friends theme song, police added: “We’re so sorry it has to be this way.”
Police in Dumfries and Galloway got in on the act too, borrowing from a Friends episode and warning the public to “keep away” from the suspect.
They stated: “He is known to have studied karate and we believe he has mastered the art of Unagi, the state of total awareness.”
