Orange glory of full moon

-

AN AUTUMN moon shimmers above the Severn Bridge yesterday as it casts its orange light over the waters below.

The image was captured just before sunrise over the Severn Estuary between England and Wales.

The orange colour is caused by moonlight passing through the thickest part of the Earth’s atmosphere.

The first full moon at this time of year is a Hunter’s moon.

It gets its name from providing light for hunters to catch animals scurrying over the stubble left in the fields after harvest.

Moonwatchers last night enjoyed what may be one of the last mild evenings Britain will see for a long time.

The mercury is expected to plummet tomorrow as Arctic winds rip through the country bringing snow flurries to parts of Scotland and northern England over the weekend.

The Met Office is predicting that gale force winds could reach 50mph in exposed parts of the Highlands.

Further south temperatures will struggle to reach double figures in contrast to last weekend when it was a balmy 70F in the South-east.

“It’s time to get those hats and gloves out – wrap up warm,” said meteorologist Clare Nasir.
