Callum piles on the pain for Brentford

-

CALLUM ROBINSON’S brace helped Preston heap more misery on hapless Brentford as Alex Neil’s men held on to win 4-3 at Deepdale.

A fifth-minute strike from Alan Browne, Robinson’s first and a lucky Tom Barkhuizen finish did all the early damage as Brentford’s season appeared to be continuing its downhill slide following Dean Smith’s departure to Aston Villa.

But the visitors fought back brilliantly to make it 3-2 in a rollercoaster clash before Robinson twisted the knife with 20 minutes left to make it 4-2. Neil Maupay made it interesting, grabbing a closerange volley to make it 4-3, but Preston managed to hang on.

rating than six after they won to return top with a 2-0 win over Ipswich.

Bielsa had scored his side’s recent form six out of 10, having won only one of their previous five games.

Kemar Roofe opened the scoring for his first goal since August 21 and captain Liam Cooper added another. Pablo Hernandez assisted both goals, standing out on his first start since August 25.

Aitor Karanka saw his Nottingham Forest side survive a third penalty miss of the season by Lewis Grabban to win 3-0 at Bolton.

Leading thanks to Joe Lolley’s goal, Karanka watched as Grabban won a 55th-minute spot-kick. But, in what is becoming a familiar pattern, the striker failed from the spot as Ben Alnwick dived sharply to his left.

Grabban made amends 10 minutes later when he raced on to Joao Carvalho’s through ball and lifted a tidy finish over Alnwick. And after Alnwick tripped Grabban after 83 minutes, the same man strode to the spot again, this time making no mistake.

Famara Diedhiou headed a stoppage-time winner as Bristol closed in on the playoff places with a 1-0 win over Hull.

Goalkeeper David Marshall had repelled all Bristol could throw at him, parrying a shot from Matty Taylor early in seven minutes of added time. But the ball fell kindly for Diedhiou to nod in the rebound and provide a thrilling end to an open contest.

An entertaining first half saw Josh Brownhill strike the post for Bristol from 20 yards.

The pattern continued after the break and it looked as though Hull would take a point when Marshall made a stunning save to deny a deflected shot from Tomas Kalas on the hour.

Hull almost stole all three points when substitute Fraizer Campbell headed wide while unmarked. But after the visitors had lost Jordy de Wijs to a second-half head injury, Bristol were able to benefit from the long period of injury time and Diedhiou took his chance to be the hero.
