UK doctor inspired by Katie creates acid-proof make-up
A DOCTOR has developed acid -proof make-up after being inspired by attack victim Katie Piper, who was eliminated from Strictly this month.
Dr Almas Ahmed began work 10 years ago to create a compound for use in cosmetics after learning of aspiring model Katie’s ordeal at the hands of an ex-boyfriend and his accomplice.
The make-up base, known as “acarrier”, will not react with caustic materials.
At the moment it is a foundation cream.
Nut Dr Ahmed, 32, from Bradford, hopes to develop a moisturiser and sun protection product.
She said: “It looks, feels, smells and works just like regular makeup but is completely heat-proof and acid-proof.
“You can’t burn it and it won’t burn through.
“When I was in university I heard about Katie Piper on the news.
“It was heartbreaking and I remember discussing it with my sister.
She was aware that it’s quite a problem in Asian countries. “She told me more about it.” Katie has rebuilt her life after the attack in March 2008, when she was 24.
Obsessive Daniel Lynch arranged for Stefan Sylvestre to throw the corrosive liquid at her.
Sylvestre has been released after nine years in jail but Lynch remains behind bars, serving a minimum of 16 years.
Dr Ahmed has invested £60,000 of her money and wants her product to win approval from UK medicine regulators.
She added: “I hope that with this product acid burns and normal burns become a thing of the past. As well as deliberate damage it can also help accidental incidents.
“If you spill your tea you won’t burn your chin.
“It also stays on while you are swimming.”
She added: “It feels good getting it to this stage.
“But it’s kind of bittersweet – I want it to work and help people but I didn’t want our society to live like this and have this fear.”
