far. There were cafe owners, people from local shops, families and general passers-by, including those who were standing at the bus stop.”

The Daily Express has been rallying behind the retail sector with its Save The High Street crusade.

The action comes as retailers face some of the toughest market conditions in recent times, as they battle advantaged online sellers.

In total, retailers in the high street have now shed some 68,000 jobs in the UK this year alone.

Last week, Debenhams announced it is to axe up to 50 stores, putting 4,000 jobs at risk after it made a near £500 million loss.

£56k for lady chatterley book

THE very copy of Lady Chatterley’s Lover used in the novel’s 1960 obscenity trial has sold for £56,250 at auction – five times its pre-sale estimate.

Presiding judge Sir Laurence Byrne took the DH Lawrence novel into court every day, concealed in a bag, to refer to the “coarse” passages his wife, Lady Dorothy, had marked up for him.

The book was bought by an anonymous online bidder at Sotheby’s in London on Tuesday and set an auction record for a Penguin paperback.

It was formerly owned by US-born art collector Stanley J Seeger, who died in 2011. The jury found Penguin Books not guilty, paving the way for a “more liberal and permissive” society, Sotheby’s said.
