Milner eyes whitewash at Whites

- Julie Stott

ENGLAND star Adam Milner has revealed how he turned down Leeds United as a teenager – and his plans to live out a few dreams at his beloved Elland Road on Sunday.

The Castleford forward is part of the England team hoping to complete a 3-0 whitewash of New Zealand.

But as a kid it was the white of Leeds, rather than England, that almost got him to chase his sporting fantasies.

“I’m a big Leeds fan and used to watch all the Champions League games a long time ago,” said Milner, right. “I went on a summer camp when I was about 15 or 16 and they wanted me to go for some trials but I turned them down, because I was committed to my rugby.

“It was not the hardest of decisions because I was better at rugby than football.”

Milner, 26, still jumped at the chance though, two weeks ago, to show the Leeds fans what they had missed. He and Tom Burgess were introduced to the crowd at half-time in the Championship win over Ipswich and took penalties in front of the Kop.

“To be involved in their game was quite a special moment for me, I enjoyed that,” he said. “It’s a massive ground.

“I cannot wait to pull my boots on again. My first introduction to Test rugby last Sunday was getting my nose splat across my face. That’s what Test footy is all about. I will be ready for it on Sunday.” International Golden Boot winner Tommy Makinson is targeting a move to the NRL in Australia. The St Helens winger, who scored a hattrick in the secondTest win, said: “It’s definitely something I want to do.”
