Rondon still in Shearer shadow

- By Simon Bird

SALOMON RONDON was not having it when told he had produced a performance reminiscent of Alan Shearer.

“What? I can never be compared to Shearer. He’s a legend here, I have three goals and he has 206,” said Rondon.

Rondon scored twice, including a stunning bullet header, and his muscular hold-up play triggered Geordie memories of centreforwards they used to worship, such as Shearer and Les Ferdinand.

But these were Rondon’s first goals at home, his first in the Premier League this season, and he was not getting carried away.

“It’s important for me to stay focused and to keep working. I do like to make Shearer happy, because I know how big a fan of Newcastle he is. To play at his high level I have to keep working,” said Rondon.

Shearer tweeted his congratulations.

“That means a lot to me,” said Rondon. “When I was young I saw Shearer on the TV, and tonight we can exchange messages.

“That’s amazing, that’s what can happen in football. I see the big legends that I am following and that’s a pressure for me.

“The No9 shirt is too heavy. Especially at this club. I have to remain focused and keep scoring goals.”

Bournemouth striker Callum Wilson will join up with England this week.

Goalkeeper Asmir Begovic said: “We’re so happy for him, he’s a great guy and a great player and someone who has overcome a lot of setbacks.

“I’m sure they can use him in both the games. He’s an all-round forward with pace, good technical ability and is a good finisher.

“He can mix it up on the physical side too. An all-round really good player.”
