The people who quit over Brexit
DOMINIC RAAB A staunch Brexiteer who was calling for Britain’s exit from the EU long before the referendum played a prominent role in the Leave campaign.
The 44-year-old karate black belt was a former lawyer working on EU and World Trade Organisation legislation. The son of a Czech-born Jewish refugee replaced his former boss David Davis as Brexit Secretary in July.
But he faced ridicule last week for saying he “hadn’t quite understood” the importance of cross-Channel trade.
ESTHER McVEY
The former GMTV reporter became the only Tory MP on her native Merseyside in 13 years at the 2010 election.
The 50-year-old went on to become Tatton MP last year and Theresa May made her Work and Pensions Secretary in January. But within months she was forced into U-turns on universal credit and housing benefit.
SUELLA BRAVERMAN
The Fareham MP worked as Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Exiting the European Union. The lawyer, 38, was born in Harrow to a Kenyan mother and Mauritian father.
SHAILESH VARA
The 58-year-old former lawyer was appointed as Northern Ireland minister in July. The North West Cambridgeshire MP held previous junior posts.
ANNE-MARIE TREVELYAN
The ardent Eurosceptic Berwick-upon-Tweed MP is a member of the European Research Group. The mother of two, 49, quit as parliamentary private secretary in the Department for Education.
RANIL JAYAWARDENA
The 32-year-old Work and Pensions Minister was first elected as the MP for North East Hampshire in May 2015.
NIKKA DA COSTA
The civil servant was brought into Downing Street to help deal with the complexities of Brexit legislation.
REHMAN CHISHTI
The Gillingham and Rainham MP resigned as vice chairman of the Conservative Party and quit as Pakistan trade envoy.
