PICKS OF THE DAY
Animals: Paul O’Grady: For The Love Of Dogs, ITV, 8pm
Paul O’Grady meets a hyperactive Staffie called Cookie, who training staff believe could make an excellent working dog
– but this is not usual for Staffies. Paul also meets a two-year-old Dogue de Bordeaux in need of some love after being found abandoned in a park and nine-month-old teacup poodle Charlie is having trouble with a broken leg. Head vet Shaun explains that the best thing for Charlie (left, with O’Grady) going forward will be to have the leg removed.
Film: The Other Boleyn Girl, Film4, 6.35pm
Ambitious Sir Thomas Boleyn hopes to advance his family’s prosperity by tempting Henry VIII to take one of his two daughters as his mistress. One of them first succeeds in becoming the monarch’s lover but reckons without her sister’s determination to achieve her grander ambition – to become queen. Historical drama, starring Scarlett Johansson and Natalie Portman (both above) alongside Eric Bana.
Fashion: Curvy Girls: Stripped Bare, Channel 5, 10pm
This two-part documentary flings open the doors of leading London fashion agency Milk, which specialises in supplying plus-size models for a variety of work. Owner Anna Shillinglaw decided to set up the agency with a handful of girls seven years ago but now has more than 100 “curvy” models on her books. As cameras gain behind-thescenes access to the inner workings of the business, Felicity, Sonny and Hayley (left) reveal how they were discovered in the first place, talk about the impact modelling has had on their lives and how they deal with the backlash from those who claim they are promoting obesity. An interesting look at a fascinating area of fashion.
Animals: The Secret Life Of The Zoo, C4, 8pm
At 8pm this evening you have a choice of animalbased viewing. It is either Paul O’Grady and his dogs or this fascinating show. A power struggle unfolds as young chimp Carlos (above) challenges dominant male Dylan, while Asian short-clawed otter Wallace is struck down by a mystery illness. Elsewhere, bush dog Franco’s pack has stopped growing after his most recent litter died.
Documentary: Superkids: Breaking Away From Care, C4, 10pm
Author and broadcaster Lemn Sissay (right) was born in Greater Manchester and spent the first 18 years of his life bouncing between foster families, children’s homes and assessment centres. For this programme, he visits Coventry to meet seven young people who are currently in the care of the council. He embarks on a mission to help them express their experiences through words and perform them to an audience that can make a difference to their lives.
