99 years ago (1919)

Our front page covered the historic election of Viscountes­s Astor as Britain’s first female MP.

We said the Tory candidate for Plymouth had a “ready repartee” and was received with the “greatest enthusiasm”.

Astor’s appeal was enhanced by her work with Allied soldiers during the First World War and her ability to answer hecklers. She served until 1945.

55 years ago (1963)

US President Lyndon B Johnson establishe­d the Warren Commission to investigat­e the assassinat­ion of President John F Kennedy.

The 888-page report, published in 1964, concluded JFK’s killer, Lee Harvey Oswald, acted alone and also that Jack Ruby acted alone when he killed Oswald two days later. Some believe the report was a cover-up.

43 years ago (1975)

Racing driver Graham Hill and five passengers were killed when his Piper Aztec plane crashed in Hertfordsh­ire.

The two-time world champion was at the controls when the plane hit trees on a golf course in bad weather.

62 years ago (1956)

Drivers began to panic over looming petrol rationing. The rationing was expected to last from December 17 to April 17. Normal car users were to be allowed 200 miles a month.
