Machete yob brings terror to streets

- By Paul Jeeves

A HOODED yob sparked terror in broad daylight as he ran along a residential street brandishing a huge machete.

The thug, caught on CCTV cameras, wielded the horrific weapon with its 18-inch blade shortly before children emerged from school.

Armed officers rushed to the scene after locals raised the alarm in Lindley, Huddersfield.

It is believed the yob had been chasing another youth through the area.

Resident Andrew Green, who saw the drama unfold, said the once peaceful suburb had become riddled with serious crime.

The postman said the main problem was gangs of youths with nothing to do, hanging around the streets and taking drugs. He said: “It’s been going on for a couple of years. They have been smoking weed and trying to intimidate me.

“I have been woken up at 4am by the noise from scooters being ridden around.

“Let’s hope the police and the courts can use the full force of the law to remove this scum off the streets.”

Another resident said: “This happened not long before children finished school for the day and they could have been caught up in it.

“Knives are bad enough but a weapon like this is terrifying.”

A 16-year-old boy was arrested after police carried out a raid on a house but no one has been charged.

It follows a surge in knife crime in Huddersfield, including a mass gang brawl in a busy shopping centre.
