Elton: We like to switch the telly off so we can have a traditional Christmas Day with the kids

- By Giles Sheldrick

HE might be one of the world’s richest pop stars but Elton John admits he still likes a traditional Christmas without the TV – except for the Queen’s Speech.

Sir Elton, 71, husband David Furnish, 56, and their two boys Zachary, seven, and Elijah, five, will spend Christmas at home in Windsor, Berkshire, he reveals.

He said: “We love a roast turkey...we have mince pies and Christmas pudding with coins hidden inside for good luck. Aside from the Queen’s Speech, we tend to keep the telly switched off as we like to enjoy our presents, play games and listen to carols.”

His love of a homely Christmas comes from happy childhood memories when he would make paper chains. And this is not the only tradition he keeps alive.

Sir Elton said: “Stockings at the end of the bed on Christmas Eve, pulling crackers at the table during Christmas dinner and a cold buffet for lunch on Boxing Day – all traditions I love and we still do every year.”

And, despite having a £500million fortune, he says he worries most about the kind of world his children will have to live in.

He tells Radio Times: “I have everything I could ever need. What concerns me is the state of the world that my children are growing up in.

“We are big on handwritten cards and notes and my sons have drawn some beautiful cards. I treasure them more than anything I’ve ever owned.”

Asked for his hopes for 2019, Sir Elton says: “I hope people can spend less time on their phones.

“There’s no substitute for spending meaningful time faceto-face with family and friends.”
