PICKS OF THE DAY
Documentary: Babies: Their Wonderful World, BBC2, 9pm
In the third and final part of this insightful little series, paediatrician Guddi Singh (left) takes a look at how children begin their journey to independence, with Professor Elisabeth Hill testing newly crawling babies with an optical illusion made of Perspex that looks like a sheer, vertical drop. Dr Emily Jones visits 18-month-old Amaya and attaches sensors to her to monitor the physiological changes in her body during a tantrum, while Professor Usha Goswami attaches young babies to highly sensitive brain scanners to see how the infants respond to different types of speech. Parents will see memories come flooding back while they watch this.
Reality: First Dates, C4, 10pm
Two Bristolians are paired together in the First Dates restaurant tonight. Actor TJ meets support worker Chanelle but their meal gets off to a rocky start when she discovers he has been out drinking and is a little worse for wear. Nerves do funny things to people. Elsewhere, Kazzi (left) has never had a proper boyfriend and fears that her cleft lip puts people off, while her date Adam normally shies away from the opposite sex. We hope Cupid has his arrow pointed at these two.
Soap: EastEnders, BBC1, 8pm
Alfie (Shane Richie, above, with Jessie Wallace as Kat) thinks he has come up with a plan to solve the overcrowding at the Slaters’. Ian cannot contain his delight when Jean beats Honey and Kim to the solo at the choir’s Christmas concert while Linda feels upset and guilty over the situation she has got herself into, and things only get worse when Shirley issues her with an ultimatum.
Film: Tower Heist, Channel 5, 11pm
The stakes are high in this late-night movie when the manager of an apartment complex asks a Wall Street financier to manage pension funds for him and his friends but the man pockets all the money instead. When he realises the fraudster is going to get away with the crime and the money will never be found, he enlists the help of a professional thief to steal it back. Crime comedy, with Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy (right), Alan Alda, Tea Leoni, Casey Affleck and Matthew Broderick.
Food and Drink: Food Unwrapped, C4, 8.30pm
We will be seeing more of Jimmy Doherty (above) later in the week when his Friday night show with Jamie Oliver continues but tonight he is in Sri Lanka to investigate the boom in coconut products over recent years. Meanwhile, Kate Quilton learns about compostable plastics – a hot topic at present – and Matt Tebbutt hits the cafes and kitchens of Paris to find out why the delicate macaron has such a hefty price tag.
