How tickled Ken would be! Widow unveils portrait of star at theatre

- By Chris Riches

A NEW portrait of Sir Ken Dodd was showcased last night in one of the legendary comedian’s favourite theatres.

His widow Lady Anne Dodd, 76, unveiled the painting along with a commemorative plaque at the Floral Pavilion in New Brighton, Merseyside.

Sir Ken, who died aged 90 in March this year, was a frequent performer at the venue, first appearing there in 1940.

He was the theatre’s last performer before it was demolished for redevelopment in 2007 – and the first when it re-opened the following year.

The artwork was created by Wirral artist Robert Newbiggin.

Speaking at the unveiling yesterday, Lady Anne said: “This is a wonderful addition to the many memories and tributes paid to him by the people of Merseyside.

“He was a true son of Merseyside and his native Liverpool and I am deeply honoured to be unveiling this tribute to his memory. I am extremely proud Ken’s memory is being marked with something so special. It will provide a lasting tribute to Ken in a venue that was so special to him, and myself, during his lifetime as an entertainer.

“As everyone knows, Ken loved nothing better than being on the theatre stage.”

Lady Anne, a former Bluebell dancer, was with Sir Ken for 40 years before they married just two days before he died.

She became Lady Anne after Ken received a knighthood in 2016.

They met during a pantomime in Liverpool and she later appeared in his shows playing the piano, guitar, flute and singing as Miss Sybie Jones.

Sir Ken found love with Anne after his first fiancee Anita Boutin died of a brain tumour in 1977 aged 45, after the couple had been together for 24 years.

Liverpool mayor Joe Anderson said: “Doddy was one of a kind and his contribution, not only to comedy, but to life in Liverpool, was unparalleled.”
