Apologise to PM, voters tell Corbyn

- By Sam Lister

MOST voters believe Jeremy Corbyn did call Theresa May a “stupid woman” and should say sorry to the Prime Minister.

The Labour leader had denied making the offensive comment and lashed out at journalists yesterday when he was quizzed about his remarks.

He faced a wave of criticism after denying the attack on Wednesday, despite lip readers insisting they were certain he uttered the phrase.

Just 12 per cent of people polled about the row backed Mr Corbyn while six in ten said he did say “stupid woman”.

Commons leader Andrea Leadsom told ITV’s Good Morning Britain: “I think he said stupid woman, that’s how it looked to me. Calling the Prime Minister a stupid woman would be absolutely unacceptable.

“Muttering stupid people I guess is less unacceptable.”

Around three quarters of people, some 71 per cent, polled by Sky Data think Mr Corbyn should apologise.

Yesterday he turned his fire on the media for being “obsessed” when questioned about the row during a visit to Northampton. “I muttered it to myself, actually, in Parliament, and you and your colleagues in the media seem utterly obsessed with this,” he said.

Mr Corbyn had been hauled back before MPs after mouthing the comments in the Commons.

He then told MPs he had muttered “stupid people”.

A former minister quit Labour yesterday in protest at Jeremy Corbyn’s handling of the party’s anti-Semitism row.

Bury South MP Ivan Lewis accused the leader of being “unwilling to condemn those whose hatred of Israel becomes Jewish hatred”.

He had been suspended from Labour for a year over an allegation of sexual harassment, which he denies.
