Luhukay pays price for slide

- By Ian Winrow

JOS LUHUKAY has left Sheffield Wednesday after less than a year in charge at Hillsborough.

The Dutchman, 55, has parted company with the Championship club following a run of one win in 10 games, leaving the Owls in 18th place and five points above the relegation zone.

Luhukay’s departure comes two days after Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri announced the South Yorkshire club was up for sale.

“I would like to place on record my thanks to Jos for the efforts he has given to Sheffield Wednesday,” said Chansiri.

“But now is the right time for both parties to move on and I wish him all the very best for the future.” Luhukay, who succeeded Carlos Carvalhal last January, led Wednesday to a 15th-place finish last season, and had appeared to have revived the side’s fortunes after a difficult start to the current campaign.

But an alarming slide down the table increased the pressure on the former Hertha Berlin manager, who departs the club having won just 16 of his 49 matches in charge. Luhukay’s assistant Remy Reynierse and Wednesday’s first-team coach Lee Bullen oversaw training yesterday afternoon.

And Bullen will now take charge of the team on an interim basis, starting with Saturday’s match at home to Preston.

Former Aston Villa boss Steve Bruce has emerged as a strong contender to assume the position long-term.
