Burns goes from zero to hero
FREDDIE Burns played his way back into Bath hearts with a matchwinning display in the 24-14 Premiership win at Wasps yesterday.
Ten weeks after his awful blunder cost his side their Heineken Cup hopes, fly-half Burns redeemed himself, scoring a spectacular solo try and kicking four penalties.
The flashy full-back had delayed grounding the ball while he blew a kiss to the crowd for what would have been the winning try against Toulouse in October.
It was knocked from his grasp and legend Jeremy Guscott called it unforgiveable.
“I was just happy I put the ball down, to be honest,” said Burns.
Bath coach Todd Blackadder praised his man of the match but confessed: “There was a lot of relief when Freddie slid in for his try.”
Wasps have now won only once in 12 outings and look a pale imitation of their former selves.
“We let the supporters down and I said that to the players,” said Dai Young, their downbeat director of rugby.
“We just didn’t give ourselves a chance, we got what we deserved.”
Gloucester remain third in the table after their hard-fought 20-17 win over bottom side Newcastle at Kingston
Park.
The Falcons came back from 10-6 down at half-time to lead 17-10 heading into the final quarter.
But a close-range try from England No8 Ben Morgan converted by Billy Twelvetrees levelled the scores and, with seven minutes to go, Twelvetrees slotted the match-winning penalty to keep Gloucester in the hunt for a play-off spot.
