THEY have enough sway with key decision makers to help change the world but the Cambridges and Sussexes also need to do their share of more mundane royal tasks.

A life of ribbon-cutting, opening schools and hospitals, attending charity dinners, may not be the most fulfilling but William, Kate, Harry – and now Meghan – could easily do more engagements without RichaRd PalmeR diluting the impact of the causes occupying the focus of their attention.

There are a huge number of charities who believe that the royal seal of approval on their letterheads, even from more minor members of the family, helps attract donations that assist the weakest in our society.

A slimmed-down monarchy must not desert those causes.

Some may think it would not hurt the royal brand for the Fab Four to each step up their public workload by, say, 50 per cent.

They could allow others beyond the official retirement age, such as the Duke and Duchess of Gloucester, the Duke of Kent and Princess Alexandra, to cut down a bit.

Aside from that, this year should be a big one for the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, not least because Meghan is due to give birth to their first child in the spring.

She is then likely to want time off, just like Kate, and that is understandable.
