Finishing in top six a struggle says Silva

- By Paul Brown

MARCO SILVA says Everton need to get real about finishing in the top six this season.

One win in their last seven games and five points from a possible 21 have left the Toffees eight points adrift of that goal.

But for a club with lofty ambitions, Silva’s suggestion they might not make it will frustrate some fans after another big summer spend.

Everton boss Silva, above, said: “We as a club did not say once that we will challenge for the top six.

“And it’s not a lack of ambition because we have big ambitions as a club. But we have to be honest and fair and look at the other clubs, with the budgets they have.

“If we have conditions to fight for something we will fight as well. But we have to be smart in these type of things. Our goal is always to win the next match. If you are an ambitious club and want to win always, you have to create the conditions so in the future you can fight with this top six like you want.”

Everton today face Leicester, the only team currently in the top half they have managed to beat all season.

And Silva could make changes after resting Gylfi Sigurdsson for their dismal defeat at Brighton.

He said: “It will be tough for all the teams as we are playing two in three days.

“We changed two players against Brighton. Let’s see how they are.

“Of course we didn’t achieve one or two results. You can lose some confidence and it’s up to us to win again. Not just one time but more games in a row.

“This confidence, we need to be more consistent.”
