Woman ‘victim of first 2019 murder’

- By John Twomey

A WOMAN stabbed to death in her home early yesterday is believed to be the first murder victim of 2019.

Paramedics battled to save the young woman, who was in her early 30s, as she lay bleeding.

But she was pronounced dead half-an-hour later at 4.50am at the property in Camberwell, south London.

Scotland Yard said: “Her next of kin have not been informed. Formal identification is yet to take place.”

A 34-year-old man was arrested at the scene, initially on suspicion of attempted murder, and was later released on bail until mid-January.

The Yard spokesman said he had been taken to a south London police station. Later a doorman was stabbed to death as he tried to stop a gang forcing their way into a private New Year’s party in London’s Park Lane.

Two other security staff, aged 29 and 37, and a 29-year-old woman who came to the door were also stabbed in the melee at about 5.30am yesterday.

Their injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

The man, in his early 30s, was pronounced dead outside the venue just after 6am.

Detective Chief Inspector Andy Partridge said: “The incident took place outside a venue that was hosting a private party. I would like to hear from anyone who was present at that event and witnessed this incident.

“A number of witnesses have already been spoken to, but it is clear many others are yet to be traced, some of whom may have captured the attack on their mobile phones.

“It appears the deceased and the two injured males were working as security staff for the party. They were attacked by a group of males who were outside trying to enter the venue.

“The female was also attacked as she assisted the security staff in closing the front door of the premises.”

There were 132 murders and manslaughters in London last year.
