Top tips for New Year hearing health

-

MILLIONS of us are hoping for a happy and healthy New Year – but looking after our hearing often gets overlooked. Ten million Britons are currently living with some degree of hearing loss. Yet, with a few simple steps you can make sure you protect your hearing and get the right help to find a solution if you are affected.

Here, in association with Amplifon, the global hearing specialists, we reveal our five top tips to help you look after your hearing…

1

Check it out: Many of us regularly get our sight checked, but what about our hearing? In fact, experts recommend getting an annual hearing test. Taking action early if you do have hearing loss could help - not doing so has been found to increase your chances of developing dementia. Only around 40 per cent of those who need hearing aids have them. Did you know you can get a free hearing test with Amplifon

2

Eat right: While the exact causes of hearing loss can be hard to identify you can protect your hearing with the right diet. Studies have shown that including omega-3 rich foods like fish and vegetables filled with antioxidants can help reduce the risk of hearing loss. If you smoke, quit. Smokers have a 70 per cent greater chance of suffering hearing loss.

3

Take note: Ask yourself some simple questions such as, ‘Do you have to ask people to repeat themselves often?’ Do your loved ones complain that you have the TV turned up too loud? If the answer is yes it could be time to get your hearing tested by a professional.

4

Sound advice: Make sure you protect your ears from loud noises, reducing the volume when you listen to music or wear hearing protection at gigs and events. If you work in a noisy environment talk to your employer about the safe levels and ear defenders.

5

Seek help: If you already have hearing aids, but think they’re not working well enough for you, or just want to make sure they are working properly, get help by popping into your local Amplifon branch – they have 200 stores nationwide.
