In 2006, brothers Simon and Mark Lerwick opened their first Subway store, and they now employ more than 160 people across Cumbria and Lancashire. “We looked into a Subway franchise and were impressed with what we saw. It offered a proven business model, with opportunity to grow,” says Simon.
“The brand was well established in the UK and had a strong customer following – it seemed to be a safe investment, with plenty of opportunity to establish and develop.”
According to the latest bfa Natwest survey, franchising now employs 710,000 people and contributes more than £17 billion to the UK economy. Simon and Mark are just two of Subway’s growing number of franchise owners and together have 17 stores.

“Our business development agent provides support and mentoring and is available at the end of the phone or via email,” says Simon. “They help with everything, including site selection, leasing, design, construction, hands-on training, purchasing, operations, advertising and much more.”

allowed Simon and Mark to work at their own pace and gives them more control, but with the confidence of working within an established brand.
Says Mark: “Becoming a franchise owner with Subway has enabled us to start up our own business, take more control over our own work-life balance and future.
“We have been able to grow our business at the rate we wanted to. As a multi-unit franchise owner we have progressed from the early days working in the stores, gaining hugely valuable skills and experience, to taking on a more strategic, managerial role.”
