Brother-in-law of Bake Off’s Paul is killed in plane crash

- By Max De Rosnay

BAKE Off star Paul Hollywood’s brother-in-law has been killed in a plane crash in Spain.

Simon Moores was flying a Piper Arrow III with another as yet unnamed man from Portugal to San Sebastian on the Bay of Biscay when it plunged into a mountain in thick fog.

Both were killed.

Mr Moores, 62, was the brother of Hollywood’s estranged wife Alex, 54.

A father of two, he lived in Westgateon-Sea, Kent.

The pilot had been tweeting about his journey shortly before the fatal crash on Wednesday, sharing pictures from the cockpit.

He posted: “Mountains of mid Spain” as he loaded up images.

Earlier in the day, he posted a picture of his plane, writing: “Dawn’s early light – apparently Biarritz (in France) make it very difficult to refuel so go to San Sebastian instead.”

Weather conditions in the crash area are notoriously unpredictable and it is known to suffer sudden fog.

Contact is said to have been lost with the plane shortly after 1pm. A local then raised the alarm after hearing an explosion.

According to Spanish authorities, the plane was owned by a business associate of Mr Moores.

It is thought the pilot was bringing the plane back to the UK after leasing it. Mr Moores ran a successful aircraft banner business called Airads out Rochester Aerodome.

He made frequent appearances on the BBC and Sky News as an aviation expert.

His job saw him do things like fly a banner over London ahead of the Brexit referendum.

Hollywood has been told about his brother-in-law’s death by family friends.

Mr Moores spoke out in April against the star following his traumatic split from Alex.

He said of Hollywood’s new relationship with a barmaid 30 years his junior: “I am sure it will all end in tears.” of
