Woman who threw drain cleaner into her ex’s face jailed

- By Neil Hyde

A WOMAN who threw corrosive drain fluid into her former partner’s face was jailed for nine years yesterday.

Julie Myers had driven to a pub car park to meet the man to discuss money she owed him, a court heard.

But a row broke out and the 57-year-old cleaner pulled out the bottle of caustic liquid and threw it at her victim, who has been permanently scarred.

A police spokesman said Myers, of Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, met her former boyfriend in the car park of the Cricketers pub in nearby Sarratt on July 2 last year.

“They were meeting to agree a settlement over money owed but Myers brought with her an envelope containing tissues instead of the money,” said the spokesman.

“The pair sat in Myers’s car to talk but the discussion became heated and Myers picked up a bottle, which appeared to contain water, and threw it into the victim’s face.

“The substance caused the man’s face to sting. He got into his car and drove to a friend, who took him to hospital and called police.”

Forensic tests revealed the bottle contained strong alkali – believed to be a domestic drain cleaner mixed with water.

At St Albans Crown Court in September, Myers admitted grievous bodily harm and being in possession of an offensive weapon.

Passing sentence yesterday, Judge Philip

Myers owed the man money Grey highlighted the cruelty of Myers’s attack and said she lured her victim to meet with the intention of causing him serious harm.

She was jailed for a total of nine years for the two offences, to run concurrently.

PC Alex Akers, from the police domestic abuse investigation and safeguarding unit, said: “The victim has been left with permanent scarring to his face as a result of the action of Myers. “The sentence clearly reflects the seriousness of the assault. “I would urge anyone suffering from domestic abuse to contact police as we have specially trained officers who will deal with your case sensitively and can provide support.”
