Olivia is The Favourite for an Oscar

- By Liz Perkins

OSCAR front-runner Olivia Colman was toasting another prize at the London Critics’ Circle Film Awards last night.

The 44-year-old actress and her co-star Rachel Weisz were the winners at The May Fair Hotel as The Favourite triumphed with four gongs where films about women dominated.

Colman was best actress for her film and Weisz won supporting actress for the same film.

The Favourite was also named best British/Irish film and took the screenwriter prize at the ceremony, hosted by comic Judi Love. Alfonso Cuaron’s Mexican drama Roma was named film of the year, and he also collected the director prize.

The top gong, the Dilys Powell Award for excellence in film, was presented to Pedro Almodovar by Tamsin Greig, who starred in the West End adaptation of his classic film Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown.

Deborah Davis, who penned the script for The Favourite with Tony McNamara, has been the lone woman on a number of highprofile shortlists for best screenplay. Davis wished more women were being recognised.

She said: “It’s very disappointing. This film took as long as it did, from financing to production, because it was about a female triangle with three female leads, which is part of the same sort of battle.”

Richard E Grant, 61, was delighted to collect his supporting actor of the year prize for Can You Ever Forgive Me?

He said: “I’ve never been nominated for something before and I’ve been an actor for 40 years.”
