Four weddings... and a reunion

- By Alex Green

THE cast of Four Weddings And A Funeral are to be reunited 25 years on in honour of Red Nose Day.

The much-loved romantic comedy is being resurrected by writer Richard Curtis for the 2019 edition of the BBC fundraiser.

One Red Nose Day And A Wedding will catch up with the film’s characters.

It is directed by Mike Newell, who made the 1994 original.

In the first photograph from the film’s revival, Andie MacDowell takes centre stage as Carrie in a pink and purple dress.

Hugh Grant looks dapper in a grey suit, while Rowan Atkinson returns as the hapless cleric Father Gerald who hilariously fluffs his lines.

Four Weddings And A Funeral followed Charles – played by a young Grant – searching for and eventually finding happiness with his American love interest Carrie.

The charity spin-off follows the success of Red Nose Day Actually, a short sequel to Love Actually, which premiered in 2017.

Screenwriter Curtis, 62, said: “We’re all definitely older – I suspect no wiser. It has been really enjoyable working out what’s happened to all the characters – and now they get back together for the fifth wedding where, as usual, not everything will go as planned.”

Four Weddings was made in just six weeks and cost under £3million, but became the highest-grossing British film in history at the time, with worldwide box office takings in excess of £190million.

It was nominated for best picture and best original screenplay Oscars and won multiple Golden Globes and Baftas.

Grant picked up a Bafta for best actor and a Golden Globe for best performance in a motion picture (comedy or musical).

The film launched his career as the leading man of a string of British romantic comedies including Notting Hill (1999), About A Boy (2002) and Love Actually (2003) – all written by Curtis.

Prince Charles also made an unexpected cameo in Four Weddings – he was shown marrying Scott Thomas’s character Fiona in a fake photograph during the credit sequence.
