Life’s such a hassle for super-rich Cleggs in US

- By Christopher Bucktin

SIR Nick Clegg’s wife is already moaning about life in America just days after moving there as her husband begins his lucrative new job with Facebook.

Miriam Gonzalez Durantez complained about red tape, the food and even the weather after the couple moved into their £7million home in California.

The wife of the former Lib Dem leader took to Instagram to list her grievances, hinting that their American dream in Silicon Valley had become something of a nightmare.

Sir Nick is said to be pocketing £15.3million a year as Facebook’s head of global affairs and communications.

Lady Clegg, 50, wrote: “One week and a half in California and I already had to fill in 63 registration forms – and no, not even all of them were online.

“Next time any Brexiteers complain about European bureaucracy, just point them to the US.” Just days later the Spanish-born lawyer added: “Oh dear, this is what I have become. What other country calls foreigners ‘aliens’.”

She also criticised American banks which still use cheques.

“You are not going to believe this. In Silicon Valley, the cradle of cryptocurrencies, they still use checks. European banks, I miss you.” She was also horrified to discover a shop was selling Spanish tortillas in a can. “There should be an International Convention forbidding treating tortillas like this,” she said alongside a picture.

In another photo showing Heinz spaghetti, she wrote: “Found this in the ‘British corner’ of my local US supermarket – I still remember first time I visited the UK as a student and was served this. Brexiteers would be proud.”

Earlier this week even the weather turned against her when the state was showered in hailstones. “I was told it was always sunny,” she whined.

The mother of three boys was also spotted testing Ikea beds for their five-bedroom home in Atherton – named “the most expensive zip code in the country” by Forbes business magazine in 2018. Lady Clegg is a lawyer with an international US firm which will see her travelling between America and the UK. Earlier this year, she said she was surprised to be leaving London with “tears in her eyes” after “reluctantly” moving to the capital 14 years ago.

“Whatever you Brits do to your country just make sure you keep this great city as it is. London is not yours – it belongs to everybody,” she wrote.
