Migrants chance their arm for overgenerous welfare
SO we’re going to spend another £6million to bolster cross-channel security (“Comment, Charlie Elphicke”, February 8). Why?
Calais Mayor Natacha Bouchart is the only one to talk sense on this issue. She blames our generous welfare system.
How right she is. Where else in the world can a migrant family arrive illegally in a country, only to be offered a home, free healthcare, education and more than £1,000 a month in various benefits?
No wonder they pass through several “safe” countries, risk their lives and give their life savings to traffickers to reach the promised land of Britain.
Cut the benefits and the migrants will be happy to remain in other “safe” countries. Len Whitehead, Skegness, Lincs
