DO BRITISH PEOPLE DRINK FAR TOO MUCH ALCOHOL?
Yes
WE never seem to know when to stop (“Beer or wine first? Either way, hangovers are hellish”, February 8).
I am in my mid-50s and my relationship with alcohol hasn’t differed much since I was 21.
My eyes are always bigger than my stomach, I always stay out later than planned and, without fail, end up spend way more on drinks than I wanted to.
The day after is usually a write-off and the height of my activity is a slow walk down to the shop for a sandwich and a paper.
In other countries I would be classed as having a problem.

I READ your piece with amusement as the concept of a hangover is completely alien to me.
This is mainly because I’m a grown woman with superb self-control, as is every member of my circle of friends.
We get together every fortnight to catch up, eat nice food and enjoy each other’s company. Wine is consumed by all but in complete moderation.
We know when to stop and also drink water with every glass.
The feeling in the morning is one of tranquillity given we have clear memories of the night before and no nasty side effects.
