Zero-hours workers ‘want out’

-

ZERO-hours workers are more likely to work nights and are paid less than other employees, a study suggests.

An analysis published by the TUC indicated that zerohours workers are having a tougher time than those in secure employment.

Nearly a quarter regularly work through the night, compared to one in 10 of the rest of the workforce, while their pay is about a third (£4.10) less an hour than other workers, said the TUC.

One in seven of those on zero-hour contracts do not have work every week, putting in an average 25 hours a week, 11 fewer than the average worker, said the report. The TUC is calling for a ban on zero-hour contracts and wants action to tackle exploitative and insecure work. TUC general secretary Frances O’Grady said: “The vast majority on zero-hour contracts want out.”
