Distressing

He spoke through a Polish interpreter and confirmed his name, address, date of birth. He pleaded not guilty to five charges.

District Judge Fred Rutherford at Hull Magistrates’ Court told the defendant: “The matters are too serious for this court and will be sent to Crown Court.”

Speaking from her home in Poland, Relowicz’s mother Marzena yesterday spoke of her shock at the case involving her son.

The 52-year-old said: “I don’t know what to say, I am just speechless.

“Why are they keeping him in jail? There is something wrong here.

“I do not understand this. It is all too much to take in. I know in my heart that Pawel did not do anything to this girl. He is a good boy who respects women and would not do anything to harm anyone.”

In a police statement yesterday, Detective Superintendent Matt Hutchinson said: “Our priority remains to find Libby and support her family at this incredibly distressing time.”

The search for the University of Hull student entered its 11th day yesterday.

Ms Squire was seen taking a taxi from a nightclub on Thursday, January 31. Officers said she was dropped off near her home at around 11.29pm, and was then seen near a bench on Beverley Road around 10 minutes later. It is understood that police are examining CCTV footage, obtained by ITV News, which shows a man getting in and out of a car minutes after the last sighting.

In the video, the unidentified man is seen opening the front passenger door and moving around the car, before getting behind the wheel and driving away at around 12.09am on Friday, February 1.

The search for Ms Squire has seen officers scour gardens and alleyways around her home on Wellesley Avenue and officers have repeatedly looked around the nearby Oak Road playing fields.

Posters displaying the face of the missing student have also been placed around Hull city centre. Students have been assisting with searches. Officers have also searched a property on Raglan Street.

Detectives have previously said they are continuing to treat her disappearance as a missing persons investigation and are “keeping an open mind” as to her whereabouts.

Relowicz was remanded in custody to appear before Hull Crown Court on March 11.
