Dad on a mission to clear children’s favourite beaches

-

A FATHER-of-two is giving over his spare time to a personal crusade to clear plastic from the local beaches his two children will use this summer.

Andrew Frost from Bodmin, Cornwall, who surfs and fishes in the area, says the smaller beaches have recently been covered in plastic and rubbish.

He said he has found toys, toothbrushes and cable ties scattered from Port Isaac on the north coast to Polkerris in the south.

Now he is campaigning to help reduce litter on the beaches and raise awareness of the problem.

He said: “I’ve done all sorts – Lantic Bay, Lansallos, Polkerris to Gribbin Head, New Polzeath, Lundy Bay, Port Isaac, Port Quin. Lantic Bay was the worst I’d ever seen a few days ago. It was an eye-opener, I came back with sackfuls.

“And that was one person for a few hours.

“There was probably the same amount again. You name it, it’s there.

“I’ve found shotgun shells, children’s toys, toothbrushes, scrubbing brushes, straws, forks, fishing stuff, cable ties.

“I want to pick up as much as I can before it goes back out into the sea.

“It’s a lot worse than I thought.

“My kids are going to be lying and swimming in this in the summer.

“I’m going to continue to collect as much as I can.

“It’s horrendous out there. I’m trying to do my bit and it’s going to be a mission – one person is not going to do it alone.”
