Volunteers have got a lot of bottle
PILES of plastic bottles lie washed up with other rubbish on the edge of a popular location for birdwatching in east London, right.
The litter is on a bend on the River Thames in Essex, next to the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds Rainham Marshes reserve.
Ironically, there is also a large landfill site beside it. The litter flourishes, despite regular clear-ups from trained volunteers.
The most bottles picked up in one morning was 4,350 – in November 2017. A further 100 bags of rubbish were collected on the same day in just three hours by 35 volunteers.
The rubbish included broken-up cups and cotton bud sticks, large items such as an office chair, estate agent “For Sale” signs and a child’s tricycle.
